In Love & Art: CHRISTO & JEANNE-CLAUDE

Christo and Jeanne-Claude were born on the same day in the same year, namely: June 13th, 1935 in Bulgaria and Morocco respectively. They first met in Paris when they were 23 years old, going on to form not only a lifelong artistic collaboration but also an enduring romantic partnership. At the heart of the New York art scene in the 60s and 70s, their epic SoHo home and studio became a hub for art-world dinner parties.
While they frequently reiterated that their work's sole purpose was to bring beauty and joy, the duo's wrappings of monumental buildings and landscape installations went much further beyond the wonder and whimsicality that their large scale creations brought, using the world itself as a canvas.
Indeed, "Their extraordinarily influential work reshaped and exalted reality by removing obviousness and habit from the world’s eyes, permanently changing our perception of urban and natural surroundings, influencing the parameters of art, sculpture, installation, land and environmental art, and expanding the very definition of contemporary art itself."
While no strangers to acclaim, ultimately Christo and Jeanne-Claude were innovators and dreamers who who brought things into the world because they wanted to see them.
Christo shared that “The most important part to grasp is that all of these projects are originated by us — I do not do commissions. Jeanne-Claude always said that these projects exist simply because we want to see them. They’re totally irrational and absolutely unnecessary. They cannot be bought, you can’t charge for tickets. The world can exist without them. And this carries a kind of absolute freedom.”

What comes along with an absolute freedom in creation? What makes Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work so significant up until this day?
Pascal Roulin, the curator of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped" exhibition (which runs from 13th June 2022 to 12th February 2023 in Tokyo) has some thoughts.
"The visual and touchable reality of these large temporary works is impressive by their size and the understanding of what it is. People are invited to observe, touch, and experience the project and its materiality.
The whole concept process also produces thousands of impressive artworks, which are also very understandable and beautiful, and pay for the project’s realization on a large scale. Quite the perfect model of an independent enterprise.
More mysteriously, the works have the power to put a smile on viewers’ faces. They make people happy temporarily and create strong memories that last forever. Many brands and advertisements would love to have this power on the masses, but here it works because it’s purer and more inspired."

While Jeanne-Claude passed away in 2009, Christo continued to work on behalf of her until his own death in 2020. Their work, legacy and love lives on.
Some Palm Report favourites include Surrounded Islands (1980-83) in Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, The Floating Piers (2014-16) on Italy's Lake Iseo and The Umbrellas(1984-91) between the USA and Japan.
